The Ethereum network has seen a significant drop in blob fees, which are transaction fees collected from Ethereum’s second-layer scaling networks. According to Etherscan, these fees hit a weekly low of 3.18 ETH in late March, equivalent to approximately $5,000 at current prices.
The average transaction fee on the Ethereum network dropped to around $0.16 in April 2025, the lowest since 2020. This reduction is attributed to users increasingly opting for smart contracts or one of Ethereum’s many second-layer scaling solutions instead of transacting on the base layer.
The rise of second-layer networks presents a double-edged sword: while they drastically reduce transaction costs on the base layer, they also erode its revenue. Concerns over base layer revenue generation and the corrosive effect of second-layer scaling solutions on Ethereum’s market share have contributed to ETH’s price dropping to historic lows. If investor confidence continues to wane, ETH could fall further to around $1,100.
